Food
Show
Objective: |
The food and nutrition project helps participants learn
to make healthy food choices, reduce disease and illness
risks, and gain knowledge of nutrition. Major learning
experiences are centered around nutrition, menu planning,
food buying and preparation, food safety, careers, and
cultural influences.
Objectives of the District 4-H Food Show:
- To promote a sound image of the 4-H Foods and
Nutrition Program both within the Texas Cooperative
Extension and throughout the district.
- To provide 4-H members an opportunity for additional
learning experiences.
- To provide 4-H members an opportunity to be recognized
for their achievements in the 4-H Food and Nutrition
Program.

Food
Challenge
Objective: |
This is the first year we will be conducting
the District 12 4-H Food Challenge competition.
We encourage every county in the district to have at least
one team. We are planning the activities so that 4-Her’s
can compete in both the Food Show and the Food Challenge if
they choose.
This contest, modeled after such competitions as the Food
Network’s "Iron Chef", challenges teams of 4-H members to
create a dish using only a pre-determined number of
ingredients. From these ingredients, team members must
identify and prepare the dish, then make a presentation
about it to the judges. The presentation will include
information about the serving size, nutritional value, and
cost of the dish. The 4-H Food Challenge allows 4-H members
to demonstrate their culinary and food safety skills to
judges and observers.
Objectives of the District 4-H Food
Challenge:
- Provide opportunities for participants to exhibit
their knowledge and skill when preparing and presenting a
dish
- Provide opportunities for participants to learn from
other team members
- Promote teamwork
- Give participants opportunities for public speaking
- Provide leadership opportunities
- Give 4-H members the opportunity to participate in a
new, exciting, competitive event
